Wells Summer Institute!

I was in upstate New York for an internship at Wells College Book Art Center with a population of 500 for the month of July. Yes I did say 500!! Aurora is so small it’s called a village not a city, town, or county!  The airport looked more like a store than an airport with only one baggage claim belt. I began to worry more as I am riding down a road heading to Wells college and all I see is farmland and the bars on my cell phone drop more and more the closer I arrive to campus. No service+no wireless+population 500= panic!

Airport!!!!!!!!

Then I took a minute to pull myself together and realized this could be a wonderful/productive experience if I take advantage of it!  There were a total of four interns who stayed the entire four weeks and then every week we had a new group of students and teachers.

My dorm at Wells

The one road that drives through Aurora. In front is Lake Cayuga. Behind is Well’s campus and then down the road is their “downtown” (post office, ice cream shop, bar/restaurant, and a market.)

Interns: Laura Rowley, Me, Claire Siepser, & Crane Guiamo
They are all studying to receive their MFA in Book and Paper at the University of Alabama.

Abroad!!!!

After completing my 2nd year at Columbia College my best friend and I traveled abroad for five weeks.  We began our journey in Bogotá, Colombia and bused our way through Ecuador and Peru.  I stumbled upon numerous letterpress, lithography, and off-set presses.  I even found a man in Colombia binding his own books as a street vendor.  My absolute favorite experience was in Lima, Peru.  I was heading to a plaza and turned down a random street which had a familiar smell but I could not figure out what it was until my eyes spied an off-set printing press.    Before I knew it I was walking down a printers heaven.  I found a printers row!!!!  There was shop after shop of off-set presses and letterpress shops.  Men were carrying stacks and stacks of paper and scraps of papers laid on the floors in piles from the trimmings of the guillotines.  Check out the photos.

This man was incredibly nice and taught me how he made his books.  Cartagena, Colombia had the most book stores and street book vendors I have ever seen.  It was fascinating.  This guy was located on a street that had one outdoor book vendor after another.  It looked like it was an outdoor library and every vendor tries to persuade you to buy their books as you walk by.

Chicago Zine Fest Today!!!!!!

Today at Columbia College was the Chicago Zine Fest!  I hope everyone made it out.  It was amazballs and totally worth it.  For those of you who don’t know about it there is always next year.

“The Chicago Zine Fest is an independent event creating an outlet for small press and independent publishers to showcase their work. Our goal is to make DIY zine-making accessible, highlight the talents of self-published artists, and give independent artists a chance to interact, and swap skills through tabling, community events, and workshops.” http://chicagozinefest.org

I wanted to purchase everything but I did walk away with a few amazing zines.  There was a letterpress and bookbinding demo as well.  One artist had an old postage stamp vending machine where you could receive your fortune.  You had the option to choose a insult, compliment or advice.  I chose advice and so did my roommate and this is was they said…

Teaching Undergraduate Letterpress

This semester was my first time teaching undergraduate students!  Since I can remember this has be one of my top professional goals!  It is soooo satisfying to see my goals come to life.  It was also as satisfying as I thought it would be to teach the undergraduate intro letterpress class.  I have had such a wonderful time with my students and as they were learning from me all semester little do they know I was learning from them. I hope there is a lot more of me teaching in the near future!! I loveeee being able to share the art I love sooo much to people in the world!

So another colleague and I put together a display case of all six undergraduate classes from the Center of Book and Paper at Columbia College.  We off three different classes for undergraduates: 2 Intro to Letterpress, 2 Bookbinding, & 2 Papermaking.  If you are in the Chicago area come down to 1104 S. Wabash and on the 2nd floor you will find the display cases or check these pics out!

End of semester Craziness!

OK Hello everyone!  Sorry it took me so long to fill you in with Dafi’s visit and Wayzgoose.  The end of the semester is here and I am trying to wrap up all my final projects.

First, Dafi’s workshop.  It was wonderful to work with someone who has a design background and not print background.  It definitely gave me a different perspective to printing which will hopefully enhance my work.  I am officially able to operate the laser cutter which is super exciting.  I want to go laser cut crazy!  Check out some of the pics from the workshop.

Second, Wayzgooseeee!  This was a wonderful getaway from the city.  Two Rivers, Wisconsin is a wonderful and welcoming town to all of us. With lots of wood type and letterpress lovers!  Hamilton Museum  It was a weekend full of printing, calligraphy demos, letter design, and panel talks.  Check out these pics as well.  If you ever have a chance to go to Hamilton you must go to the ice cream shop where the first ice cream sundae was created!  There are wonderful antique shops in the next town as well!!

My design being cut out of wood on the laser   cutter

The wood cut from the laser cutter on the bed of the press all inked up and ready to be printed

WAYZGOOSE!

Dafi Kuhne @ Columbia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why hello everyone! I have some super exciting news! Swiss artist Dafi Kuhne is here in Chicago for two weeks!  He currently has part of his thesis woodtype now on display in the woodtype exhibition at the Book and Paper Center.  It is located on the 2nd floor in the 1104 South Wabash building at Columbia College.  This weekend he is doing a workshop on producing woodtype using an laser cutter called Digital to Analog!  I am sooo lucky I will be taking the workshop! He also gave an amazing lecture about his work this past Thursday.  If you are interested he is conducting another workshop during next week as well called printing on cardboard.  I will post some pics after the workshop.  This is going to be an intense next two weeks.  After this weekend with Dafi I am headed to the Wayzgoose conference at Hamilton Woodtype Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.  So you will be hearing more from me soon.
